Description

On a gently rolling canvas dotted with thick stands of trees, meandering creeks and handsome pockets of grassy wetlands, architects John Fought and Tom Lehman have painted a glorious picture. Impeccable grooming, strategic bunkering and classic shotmaking options further define the scene. From the back tees, Somerby stretches 7,209 yards, providing the low handicap golfer with a rigorous test of golf. However, Fought and Lehman created the golf course with five sets of tees, giving players of all abilities a chance at par. While the slope and course ratings tell a story that Somerby will not be conquered easily, the course is eminently fair.

The design motif of the golf course is characteristic of the 'golden-age' (1915-1935) of golf course design when Donald Ross, A.W. Tillinghast, Alistair Mackenzie and George C. Thomas and others were creating their master works. The golf courses of this era were routed efficiently so very little earthwork was necessary and connections between greens and tees were short. Their hazard placement were carefully thought out to tempt and tantalize the player. The style chosen for Somerby Golf Club is a grassed down bunker faces for ease of maintenance, especially during thunderstorms that are so common in the MIdwest. The fairway movement is gentle and subtle, with very little mounding. The streams, lakes and wetlands areas are natural looking with very few abutments or hard edges. There are natural hillocks integrated into the golf holes that are covered with fescue grasses. Trees are planted as a frame or backdrop to the golf holes and not as a strategic element.

Regardless of how you score, however, rest assured that Somerby's tranquil beauty, artfully sculpted bunkers and immaculate bentgrass fairways and greens will yield a golf experience that will linger long in memory.
